Here’s a not-so-secret truth… I haven’t relied on keyword tools to drive traffic in over a decade. In my opinion, they can make you poor, lazy, and, well, a bit dull.
Okay, maybe that’s a bit harsh 😊, but keep reading, and you’ll understand where I’m coming from…
How Keyword Tools Operate…
Keyword tools all function similarly, pulling from the same basic data source (Google) and delivering nearly identical results. Some might add a fancy algorithm to justify their price tag, but at their core, they’re just interpreting Google’s data.
They spit out common search terms and a few extra details.
- iPhone…
- iPhone charger…
- iPhone USB charger…
- best iPhone USB charger…
- best iPhone USB charger for seniors… and so on.
By the way, if you thought that last example was “deep keyword research,” you absolutely need to read this entire post!
Think about it: we’ve had over 20 years of advanced internet marketing. Do you honestly believe massive, multi-billion-dollar corporations haven’t already snapped up all the obvious online opportunities?
Spoiler alert: they did… a decade ago.
How “Demand Media” Dominated the Internet…
Ever heard of Livestrong? Or eHow?
Chances are, you have, because they’ve been popping up in search results for years. These sites, along with several others, were owned by Demand Media, now rebranded as ‘Leaf Group.’ They were the pioneers in scaling up long-tail keyword ranking.
Their strategy was straightforward…
- Create an enormous list of keywords.
- Pay 15−15−20 for an article.
- Publish it.
- Turn countless small traffic streams into a massive flow.
- Monetize through ad revenue.
Sounds simple, right? But when we say “at scale,” we’re talking about publishing 5,700 pieces of content EVERY SINGLE DAY.
We know that long-tail searches account for over 90% of all searches. So, they dominated the market. That is, until Google realized the content was low-quality and rolled out the Panda update.
While “content farming” isn’t what it used to be, Leaf Group is still thriving – so much so that they were recently acquired for $323,000,000. Clearly, someone sees significant value in their approach.
Robots vs. Humans…
Just like you wouldn’t rely on a GPS to plan a scenic coastal drive, hitting the best restaurants and soaking in breathtaking views…
… you shouldn’t rely on a robot to handle your keyword research.
Here’s why.
Sure, you might reach your destination on paper, and it might seem efficient… but something crucial is lost when you remove the human element and blindly trust data.
… got 114,000 searches per month? Great!
… costs $6.20 per click? Fantastic!
Sounds like a hot keyword, right?
Well, it’s probably so hot that every Fortune 500 company is already targeting it. Or maybe Google has decided to keep users on its platform by serving up a “snippet” from its Knowledge Graph.
But here’s the real question: Is that keyword truly going to give you the best return on your effort? Is it more or less likely to lead to a sale or meaningful action?
These are critical considerations that keyword tools simply don’t address. Blindly chasing as many keywords as possible (especially the same ones everyone else is targeting) is usually a bad idea because:
a) You’ll likely fail, and…
b) It won’t be as profitable as it could be.
The Reality of Your Competition…
When you use a keyword tool, you’re essentially competing against three main types of competitors:
- Mega-Corporations
- SEO Agencies
- Black Hatters
Mega-corporations, surprisingly, take the most human-centric approach. Why? Because human effort is valuable (read: expensive), and they have the budget to hire professional content teams. They produce high-quality content, market it effectively, and trigger the algorithms needed to gain visibility. This includes giants like Amazon and even Google itself.
SEO agencies are often incredibly skilled at SEO. They generate anywhere from thousands to millions per month to fund their efforts and secure the rankings their clients want. Their approach is usually a mix of human expertise and automation -something I can respect.
Black Hatters are obsessed with “gaming the system” and often succeed using whatever tech they can get their hands on. This is the most robotic, automated approach of the three.
In each case, you’re up against competitors you probably can’t outmatch. So, what’s the solution?

I recommend using my method to uncover low-competition, high-value keywords that everyone else is overlooking. Work smarter, not harder, and scale from there.
But Does It Actually Work?
Absolutely.
Last year (2024), I generated 274,800 worth of FREE traffic from a project I hadn’t touched in two years. The year before that (2023), it was 274,800 worth of FREE traffic from a project I hadn’t touched in two years. The year before that (2022), it was 455,545. And in 2021, when I was actively working on it, I brought in $588,300 in free traffic.
What I mean by “free traffic” is this: if I were to PAY for that traffic through pay-per-click ads, I’d be charged around $5 per click because it’s a competitive, commercial niche. This is only one site, a side project, that I’ve barely touched in years…
… still generating high-quality, free traffic every single day.
I apply this method across my entire business. More importantly, I’ve taught this approach to others, and they’ve been able to outrank mega-corporations using it…
Edward J. Winslow, for example, consistently achieves top Google rankings using our method for finding low-competition, high-value keywords.
